When to grow your business team.

Updated: Nov 9, 2023

As a superhero, you’re used to doing everything on your own - saving the world, battling supervillains, and maybe even doing your own laundry. But when it comes to running your business, it’s important to recognize when it’s time to expand your team. After all, even Batman had Robin, Batgirl, Alfred and the Justice League.

But when do you know it's time? When should you start assembling your own team of sidekicks?

Here are a few signs that it might be time to expand your business team:

  1. You’re drowning in jobs. If you spend more time working on projects for your customers/clients and notice the important things needed to market or run your business lack consistency or aren't being done - get help! Investing in extra support means you can increase productivity and focus on growing your business.

  2. You’re missing out on opportunities. You may have a new client who needs more attention than you can give, or you might be missing out on projects because you don't have time to take on more work. You're missing out on potential growth opportunities if you don’t have a team to support you. A diverse team can bring new skills, ideas and perspectives to the table, helping your business reach new heights.

  3. You’re burned out. Running a business can be exhausting, and without a support system in place, you might find yourself feeling overwhelmed and burnt out. Bringing in a team can help alleviate some of that stress and allow you to focus on the aspects of your business that you enjoy the most and maintain a healthy work-life balance.

  4. You're making silly mistakes. YES, it happens - often because you're juggling a lot of tasks and trying to speed through it all to meet deadlines. With this comes mistakes. Expanding your team lets you increase your capacity to take on larger or more complex projects. Or if you're like me - you can have your team proofread your work before sending it off to clients to avoid silly typos.

Whether it's due to new client demands or simply taking your business to the next level, an expanded team can help you scale up effectively. It allows you to take on larger projects while maintaining the quality of your work.

Earlier this year I felt burnt out. I was struggling to juggle mahi and life. My thoughts started to say "I don't know if I can keep doing this".

  • My to-do list would grow with 3 new jobs before I could complete one.

  • I was sending emails with typos.

  • I was struggling to invest time into my own business, research or development.

  • I felt like I was constantly chasing my tail.

Something needed to change.

So I changed the narrative in my head from "I'm drowning", to ✨ "I'M GROWING"✨

  • I'm growing and have more jobs to do so can now hire someone to help me.

  • I'm growing my visibility and opening more opportunities.

  • I'm growing past my recent comfort zones and moving into new territory.

That was the moment I knew it was time to expand my team.

The most important thing is to recognize when it’s time to expand your team and bring in the support you need to take your business to the next level. It may not be as easy as calling on the Bat-signal, but the effort will be worth it in the end. To see how I have expanded the To Done (NZ) team, come and meet the team today - and see how we can support you.
